Why Running is the Smartest Way to Exercise When You Travel
I don’t have to tell you that exercise is important – you know that already. Exercise gives you energy, releases endorphins (#happiness), improves strength and flexibility … all that good stuff. But when we travel we often forget the importance and benefits of daily exercise. We make excuses: “I walked 20 kilometres yesterday – I think that counts as a workout!” or “I can’t be making time to exercise – there’s so much to see and do!” Sound familiar? I too found myself using these excuses this past fall until one day, I had had enough. I needed to move my body – I needed my workout! What did I do? I went for a run.
Running is the smartest way to exercise when you travel
When we travel, we want to be outdoors. We wake up early and sleep late, spending as much time as we can exploring our new surroundings. And adding running to your travel routine is ideal because it allows you to experience all the things you love about travel: the outdoors, exploring, novelty – all while getting an awesome workout.
Why else is running the smartest way to exercise while traveling?
With running, there’s no to and from a gym. Your run is your to and from. Some destinations are more runner-friendly while others aren’t – but don’t let that stop you from doing your thing. Anywhere you happen to be, you can run. While I was in Paris, I really wanted to continue my running schedule but I didn’t see
anyone other women running (and I was too far from la Seine to join the running crowd). Regardless, I ran around the 9th arrondissement. I got a lot of weird looks as I swerved around well-dressed Parisians with my sweaty, tomato-red face and messy bun. The good thing about running is, “you don’t care if people are staring – it’s just for a second ’cause then you’re gone!” (any other FRIENDS fans in the house?) Alongside no to and from, running doesn’t require you to lug around a heavy gym bag or other equipment (because you do enough of that with your luggage).
Another way to get your run in and learn a lot about the place you’re visiting is by signing up for a guided running tour. We’re used to seeing walking tours and even bike tours – but running tours are becoming more and more popular. Running tours are great because not only do you get your daily run in but you also get a new perspective of the destination, hit the major sites and even meet fellow runners. Here are some running tours in the US and in Europe to start you off.
Whether you choose to run with a group or on your own, running is the ideal way to exercise when you travel to take in the sights and the magic of your chosen travel destination.
