10 Honest Quotes About Travel That Are Worth Remembering

January 8, 2016,

I am sharing these #truthbomb quotes because a lot of the time, travel quotes and travel articles paint travel as all too glamorous even in (or maybe especially in) its times of ugliness (and I’m guilty of this, too!). The thing is ― when you travel you are in for a real adventure. Adventure is actually defined as: an unusual and even hazardous experience or activity. That’s the part of travel I wanted to share with these quotes: the moments of uncertainty, the lack of control and the testing of friendships but also the funny parts and a few more hopeful truths, too.

“Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things – air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky – all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it.”
― Cesare Pavese

“Travel empties out everything you’ve into the box called your life, all the things you accumulate to tell you who you are.”
― Claire Fontaine

“It is a bitter-sweet thing, knowing two cultures. Once you leave your birthplace nothing is ever the same.” Sarah Turnbull

That is the quote which spoke to me. That is exactly what happened to me in 1977 when I went to study in Perugia, Italy and left Montreal, my birthplace. Nothing is ever the same…I am different. Even after almost 40 years I still measure things against my experience and my whole existence is coloured by those almost 5 months spent in Italy.

This one hit home. YEAH for sure. All of these actually are so beautiful… so right.

And this is how I feel about life…. “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

I love the last one! We must explore and head towards the unknown sometimes. We must live and try new things, so that when we look back, we do not regret a thing. We have one life to live, therefore we must make the most of it.
